The Easy Way to Write Short Stories That Sell

This advise was posted by a writer in the Writers 750 group at Linkedin.

" I have a formula for short stories.

  • For 750 or less - problem, climax, resolution.
  • For 1000-2000 - problem, setback, climax, resolution.
  • For 2000-5000, intro, problem, setback, twist, climax, and resolution.

I find these give me more than my word count needed and then i can cut back where I can find places to tighten. Hope that helps. it came from a book on short story writing call The Easy Way to Write Short Stories That Sell by Rob Parnell.

the goal is to find a character situation where they are in trouble, decide what they must resolve (fix/find/save) and then write how they got there and what happens after. adding more difficulties before and after they realize what needs fixed then lengthens the story.

I find writing the 750 or less to be the most difficult and still put in a satisfactory ending resolution. It's harder to show the trouble, climax, and aftermath in a short short."
